The Best Motherhood-Friendly Dresses

I have basically been pregnant or nursing for the past three years (SOS), so I’ve learned a thing or two about maternity clothing — what works and what doesn’t during these early stages of motherhood. I am a strong believer that you can (and should!) still manage to feel glamorous and special throughout pregnancy and the months afterward. During my most recent pregnancy, I found myself re-wearing many of the high quality dresses I had purchased for my first pregnancy and am continuing to wear them through the postpartum period. They are staples in my wardrobe during this phase of life. The ones I keep reaching for come from my favorite designers are not maternity-specific, but nevertheless accommodate the changing needs of my body at this time in my life.

It’s no secret that you don’t need to shop exclusively from maternity brands, although there are a few new ones I love (hello Frances Hart!) that are designing tastefully for mothers. Luckily, many of the on-trend dress shapes at the moment work wonderfully for both a growing bump and nursing access. So, if you’re considering investing in a few luxurious pieces to add a little glam throughout pregnancy and beyond, I’ve rounded up my favorite styles for you.

Shirt Dresses

A billowy shirt dress with a tie waist is the true hero of maternity wear. There is no easier way to feel put-together and chic with plenty of room to grow during pregnancy, and with buttons to allow for nursing access with your newborn. I have a few that are on very heavy rotation in my closet.

Nightgown-Inspired Dresses

It’s a gift from the heavens for pregnant and nursing women everywhere that nightgown-inspired dresses are in style right now. I love that these can literally go from day to night and the stretchy neckline is particularly handy with a newborn. From Sleeper to Hill House and Loretta Caponi, the trend is going strong.

Kaftans

Kaftans are always chic and roomy with or without a growing bump, and a favorite for tropical vacations. In this photo I’m wearing Pippa Holt.
