Favorites for the Bedroom

When it came to planning the decor for our new home, I started by prioritizing the two main bedrooms. I had them fully planned out before we even moved in, from the wallpaper to trim color, rugs, window treatments, furnishing and accessories.

Decorating the rest of the rooms in the house will be an ongoing process — they are in good shape but leave opportunities for us to continue to work on them and add special things we find without committing to a full decor scheme until we are ready. I did this for a few reasons: first, it would be overwhelming and out of our budget to plan and execute the whole house at once. I also wanted to move in and get a sense of how we will use each room and allow time to become accustomed to the layout before going all-in on a specific plan. Finally, part of the fun of having a house is leaving projects to tackle over the years – I think I would be sad if everything was completely finished and I didn’t have more creative possibilities to think through!

Anyway, what I did want was to have both bedrooms completely finished for us right away. Between Covid and the postpartum period with a new baby on the way, we will be spending lots of time in our bedrooms. I wanted them to feel like a peaceful escape, and unique to our style. I am very sensitive to the look and feel of my environment, so having a bedroom that sparks joy visually is very important to me.

I am so happy with the way our bedroom turned out, and while everything is not fully “finished” — we are still waiting on window treatments and a few other things — the most important aspects like our bed, bedding, and the overall color scheme have come together beautifully and just as I imagined. I hope to do a full “reveal” later one once I’m proud of every corner of the room!

For now, I wanted to share the things we have chosen and love as well as some of my top picks from around the web that were on my shortlist!

Linens:

I had seen Boll & Branch advertised quite a bit on social media and was not sure whether it was overhyped. They opened up a showroom in Connecticut a few months ago, so I was able to stop by and check their products out in person. I loved the look of the Signature Eyelet Set, which is what we went with for the main bedsheets and duvet cover, and can truly say they’re extremely soft and comfortable! I love that you get a traditional look without compromising softness, and they somehow remain pretty wrinkle-free which is nice. The eyelet detail adds a little charm as well.

I used to be all about accent pillows on a bed, but lately am gravitating more toward the fresh look of clean white sheets and nothing else. However I did want to find euro sham covers with a special detail, and loved how these Matouk Daphne shams complemented the wallpaper perfectly! The delicate silver embroidered trim is so lovely. Matouk is quite pricey which is why I didn’t go for the entire sheet set, but the little touch on the shams is just enough!

The bed:

I really did agonize over the bedroom decor for months before pulling the trigger. I debated choosing a beautiful fabric for the headboard versus going with a wallpaper. In the end, I decided on the Serena & Lily’s Tall Fillmore Bed in a refreshing pale blue color (“coastal blue”). I love how it looks against the busy pattern of the Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper. It pulls out the tiny accents of blue in the birds and provides a contrast of simplicity to the space.

Rug:

We went with this Annie Selke rug. It’s soft and silky and makes the room feel very luxe. I considered this grey-toned sisal which also would have been nice.

Lighting:

For the ceiling light (not pictured — will capture soon!) we chose Aerin’s Hampton Chandelier in plaster white. It plays to the wallpaper perfectly; they look like they were meant to go together! The lamp is antique, I picked it up in San Francisco when we lived there years ago and it still one of my favorite finds! The sconces were hand-me-downs from my parents; we benefited from the fact that they recently redecorated. But I added these lovely shades from Amy Berry Home in Scalamandre’s Swedish Linen Check (skylight), which I also used for the bench and window treatments that are in the works. The color of this fabric pairs nicely with the trim color in the room, Farrow & Ball’s “light blue.” Both are very much between a grey and a blue and can read either way depending on the light.

Nightstands:

The nightstands are vintage, but I’ve linked some others I love / considered below!

  1. I love the wallpaper and soothing colors. So nice to see a realistic approach to decorating. Your new post reminds me of Julia Berolzheimer who I absolutely read daily. Keep going….I can’t wait to see the rest of the house.

  2. Your room is indeed divine. Everything is so well put together. Would you mind letting me know the pattern of your gorgeous wallpaper? Thank you.
