Designing a Nursery for Baby Number Two

The room I have been most excited to plan for in our new home is the nursery! I had such fun decorating Peter’s room, and while I will be sad to leave it behind, I have been determined to create a new room that we will all love equally as we prepare to welcome a baby girl to our family.

I wanted to share a bit about the planning process, the children’s rooms I pinned and drew inspiration from, and a progress update. I also put together short lists of some of my favorite nursery finds I gathered throughout my search for those of you who are also in the planning stages.

Peter’s room, pictured above, has been so special for his first (nearly two!) years of life. Because of the layout of our new home, it makes the most sense to have our two babies share it for the first while. Later on, Peter will probably move into the third bedroom (which we plan to use as a home office for now). Baby girl will spend the nights in our room for at least the first four months anyway.

Because the two children will share this new nursery, I wanted to keep it as gender-neutral as possible, using green as the primary color, though I can’t resist including some pink. I love the above image from a playroom in Stockholm and its timeless use of the color green. Below are a few other nursery photos I adore.

I love the playfulness of the above room by Elizabeth Hay design (in Singapore, where I grew up!). She is a master of mixing pattern. I stumbled upon this image after I had made my wallpaper choice, and it only validated the decision. The wallpaper we are going with is Hummingbirds by Cole & Son, which comes in quite a few colorways. I am using “pastel,” while the photo above, I believe, is “soft multi-colour.

Above is my (totally unprofessional) mock-up “scheme” for this room. We aren’t using an interior designer for our house, and I am very excited for the challenge and opportunity to put my love for design to the test.

Sources for the above: light, crib, rug, accent pillow, side table, mirror, green painted chest of drawers, changing basket, bassinet, paper flowers, hearts crib sheet.

Below is the current state of the room! Wallpaper is installed and we went with Farrow & Ball “cooking apple green” for the trim! The trim color was a last minute decision and I’m eager to get into the space to confirm it was the right choice. Perhaps white would have looked a bit more “fresh,” but I think the quirky and charming detail will be a nice touch. We will have to see once the furnishings are all moved in. I had green check roman shades made for the windows and can’t wait to see how those tie everything together as well.

As promised, I’ve also rounded up some of my favorite nursery pieces that I found during my search for this room! Hope this is helpful for any of you prepping for a new baby or simply looking to upgrade your existing children’s room.

  1. Hey Samantha,
We’re having our first baby in July. I am starting to plan the nursery and was wondering what the wallpaper in Peter’s old nursery is from? Have been searching for it or similar everywhere… thank you in advance. The best wishes and stay safe.
